A vessel to conquer dry land

The history of plants - much as that of life - began in the water. By acquiring sap-conducting vessels, plants could venture on further from wet environments . This innovation proved a  transformative  change in our planet's destiny .

Whilst the oceans would be teeming  with organisms, dry land was, by contrast, dead calm. Then,  420 million years ago, mosses reached dry land. Their decomposition contributed to the creation of environments conducive to the  development of other plants, fungi and animals. Soil formation could now begin... 

 

Thus, the first plants with vascularised stems took root. Until then, plants would be very simple structurally speaking.  Vascular plants saw their strucure reinforced with vessels, which enabled them to stand straighter and grow higher, which, in turn, allowed for an  intensified expansion to virgin lands, by which  plants gradually emancipated themselves from wet environments. This innovation, whilst transforming terrestrial ecosystems , paved the way for the flourishing of life on dry land.

Plants resort to photosynthesis to generate their organic matter. This process uses solar energy to change carbon dioxide  (CO₂) and water (H₂O) into carbohydrates, whilst releasing oxygen (O₂) in the atmosphere.

Cooksonia, dating back 425 million years, are the oldest vessel plants known to date. They were a few centimeters tall and had neither leaves nor flowers.
