Atmosphere, atmosphere!

All living creatures do not have the same needs in terms of atmosphere.  2,4 billion years ago, the composition of the Earth's atmosphere changed profoundly. To our greatest benefit - and at the detriment of the anaerobes, which cannot  survive when exposed to oxygen.

The atmosphere is a gas layer surrounding the Earth : it allows us to breathe , protects us from the sun and keeps our planet at the right temperature.  Originally, it consisted mostly of volcanic gases such as hydrogen and helium, a perfect environment to anaerobes. Then, 2.4 billion years  ago, cyanobacteria began photosynthesising large quantities of oxygen which accumulated in the atmosphere and eventually lead to the "Great Oxidation Event" (GOE).

The atmosphere's composition attained  levels of stability  very similar to those we currently know: it comprised mostly nitrogen (78%) and oxygen (21%) in addition to traces of other gases in small quantities, which is the ideal mix for the aerobes we are (yes, we definitely are aerobic creatures because we need oxygen to survive).

The oceans used to contain large quantities of dissolved metals, such as iron. The oxygen released by the cyanobacteria reacted with these oxidised metals, which precipitated into hematite and magnetite, forming deposits  of « rust » on the ocean floor. Once every ounce of metal present in the oceans was exhausted by these chemical reactions, oxygen would first accumulate in the seas  and then in the atmosphere. The Earth's chemistry went through radical changes. This process lasted between 200 and 400 million years.
