Congratulations! After 4.5 billion years, you have arrived at the origin of planet Earth, just in time to witness the formation of the solar system...
Scientists explain the formation of the solar system by using a model called the "solar nebular hypothesis," developed in the 18th century by Kant and Laplace.
According to this hypothesis, a gigantic cloud of hydrogen, helium, and dust, enriched with heavy elements from ancient stars, collapsed under the effect of gravity. This process led to the formation of a protostar at its center: our Sun.
The rest of the cloud continued to rotate, forming the protoplanetary disk: this is where the planets—including our home, planet Earth—moons, and asteroids would be born.
As we have discovered during this journey to the edge of our history, this is a "dramatic slow motion": between the moment the cloud begins to collapse and the formation of the sun and the complete planetary system, 10 to 100 million years passed. That was 4.5 billion years ago.

Did you know?
To estimate the age of the solar system, scientists use meteorites. One of the oldest found on Earth, the Allende meteorite, fell on 8 February 1969, in Mexico. Weighing nearly two tons, it has been dated at 4.567 billion years old, which is approximately the age of the solar system.
