Turning plate tectonics

The Earth is a gigantic puzzle whose pieces are in perpetual motion. This waltz has been going on for at least 3.3 billion years: it has shaped the planet, with the formation of continents and mountains. It is also this waltz that causes volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.

The Earth is composed of three layers, with the core in the center, the mantle, and the crust on the surface. Compared to the other layers, the crust is very thin. It is made up of rigid tectonic plates that rest on the viscous mantle and move a few millimeters to a few centimeters per year: these plates move toward, away from, or slide relative to each other. Plate tectonics is the scientific theory that explains these movements.

Rocks that were on the surface billions of years ago are now found several kilometers beneath the Earth's crust. As they dive beneath the surface and with increasing heat and pressure, the rock changes composition (such as limestone transforming into marble). This process, metamorphism, explains why it is rare to find fossils that are several billion years old.

The continental crust today has an average thickness of 35 km while the oceanic crust is much thinner, with a thickness ranging from 5 to 10 km.
