Lunar riddle and cosmic collision

It was poked in the eye by a rocket and is home to a mysterious black monolith, it was also visited by Tintin, whereas H.G. Wells' main characters encountered the local residents, i.e. the Selenites. So, how was the Moon formed?

Several theories have been proposed to explain the formation of the Moon. The dominant scenario today, that of a giant collision, was formulated in 1946 and continues to be refined with new discoveries.

To understand this scenario, we must go back to a time when the solar system was still forming and celestial bodies were evolving in a chaotic cosmic dance. About one hundred million years after the formation of the solar system, particles gradually aggregated to form protoplanets. Not all of them survived: this was the case for Theia, a protoplanet that was evolving close to the trajectory of the future Earth, almost twice its size.

Theia and Earth eventually collided (1). Some of Theia's debris was absorbed by Earth, while some was thrown into space (2), forming the Moon (3).

This scenario is supported by lunar rocks brought back to Earth by the Apollo missions. In 2001, advances in analytical technology confirmed that the composition of these rocks was very similar to that of terrestrial rocks.

And there you have it: the Earth is no longer alone. Like many other planets, it now has a satellite: the Moon.
