It is raining meteorites
Tracing back the thread of Earth's history, we arrive at a period called the Hadean, in reference to the god of the underworld. This era is apocalyptic and mysterious.
Geologists have defined four main aeons in Earth's history: the Hadean, the Archean, the Proterozoic, and the Phanerozoic (in which we currently live).
The Hadean, the first aeon in Earth's history, begins with the formation of our planet 4.5 billion years ago. It ends with a Late Heavy Bombardment (LHB), when meteorites intensely hit the Earth, heating its surface and keeping it molten, up to 1,000 km deep. This is when the migration of heavier elements to the Earth's centre and lighter ones to its surface formed the Earth's three main layers: core, mantle, and crust.
Given the lack of rocks from this period, our geological knowledge is limited. However, the existence of this period is inferred from the analysis of lunar rocks brought back by the Apollo missions. They revealed that the lunar soil was approximately 4 billion years old, providing valuable clues about the early days of our planet.
The Late Heavy Bombardment might have been caused by the giant planets' final migration towards their current orbits, a transition that is thought to have perturbed the asteroid belt, causing for meteorites to rain into the centre of the solar system. The resulting impacts affected both the Earth and the Moon, traces of which are still very visible on our satellite in the form of craters..

Did you know?
The water present on Earth has two origins: firstly, 4.5 billion years ago, the young Earth in a state of fusion released gases, amongst which water vapour, by way of volcanoes. Then, when the LHB happened. water and ice-rich comets and asteroids crashed into the the Earth, bringing thus large quantities of water. Hence, whether it is the water in your glass or that we are all made of, it is partially of extraterrestrial origin. Cheers!
